How to Protect Your Carpet from Stains

We’ve all experienced food spills on the carpet or seen kids drop a full cup of red juice right onto a freshly cleaned carpet. Carpets often end up with mysterious spots and stains. While a completely stain-free life might be unattainable, especially with kids, there are ways to minimize stains or at least make them easier to clean.

1. Leave shoes at the door. Shoes are a major cause of carpet stains. You never know what might have been stepped on outside. To keep mud and other debris off your carpets, require everyone to take their shoes off at the door. Providing a shoe mat right inside the entrance of your home can encourage this behavior.

2. Use mats. If going shoeless indoors isn’t an option, or you don’t want to ask guests to remove their shoes, make sure to use mats to catch the majority of the mess. Place a heavy-duty mat outside your door and another rug inside. This is especially important during wet seasons to soak up any water, mud, or ice salt that may be on your shoes.

3. Bathe your pets before they come inside. While it might be impractical to bathe your dog every time they go out, if they get particularly dirty or muddy, rinse them off before letting them back in. This prevents those unwanted muddy paw prints on your carpet.

4. Use sippy cups or cups with lids for kids. If your kids are prone to spilling drinks, have them use cups with lids. This way, even if they knock over their cup, nothing spills. Fun character cups can help kids adapt to using them.

5. Limit food and drinks to the kitchen or dining room. To prevent stains, especially from juices and sodas, consider enforcing a rule that food and drinks stay in the kitchen or dining room. This rule can apply to adults too, as wine stains are a common issue.

6. Use rugs on top of carpet in high-traffic areas. Rugs are cheaper and easier to clean or replace than carpet. Using rugs in areas prone to spills and stains can protect your carpet. Bonus tip: if you install new carpet, keep the leftovers to use as rugs.

7. Address spills quickly. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Clean up spills immediately to increase your chances of saving your carpet.

8. Use a carpet protectant. For the best chance of preventing stains, use a carpet protectant.
